Left alone, this can rot timber floor joists and damage the ceiling of the room below. If you notice a musty smell that will not go away no matter how much you clean, treat it as an early warning rather than something to ignore.
Failing Grout and Loose Tiles
Cracked grout lines and tiles that sound hollow when tapped mean the waterproofing behind them has likely failed. Re-grouting alone will not fix this if the tanking membrane underneath has already let water through, which is one of the most common issues we find once we open up an older Dublin bathroom.
Poor Ventilation and Persistent Mould

Bathrooms fitted more than 15-20 years ago often still run on old lead or galvanised steel pipework, low-pressure gravity-fed systems, or fixtures that no longer meet current building regulations. If you are already renovating for style, it is worth having a plumber check whether the pipework behind the walls needs upgrading at the same time, since this is far cheaper to do during a renovation than afterwards.
